In a brilliant collaboration with the Hamburg-based shipyard, Blohm+Voss, the late Zaha Hadid was responsible for the design of a marvellous superyacht, a 128-metre master prototype. Let’s take a look at the most resilient and fluid features.
Over the course of time, this massive project has spawned into the “Unique Circle Yachts” composed of five fully-engineered 90-metres yachts. According to Hadid, the design of the yacht can be characterised by its “fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research shaping the design of the hull.”
“The exoskeleton structure of the upper section is an interwoven network of supports that vary in thickness and lend a natural aesthetic to the yacht’s external appearance; evoking the organic structural systems of natural marine formations and connecting the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly via expressive diagonals.”
By not having the conventional appearance of yacht, this cutting-edge design “creates an intense connectivity between the various decks and elements of the design”
The first vessel to be created was the 90m Jazz yacht which was specified and detailed by the Blohm+Voss. It has more technical refinements so as to have the proper qualifications for ocean crossings.
Zaha Hadid further explained that “As a dynamic object that moves in dynamic environments, the design of a yacht must incorporate additional parameters beyond those for architecture – which all become much more extreme on water. Each yacht is an engineered platform that integrates specific hydrodynamic and structural demands together with the highest levels of comfort, spatial quality and safety.”

CEO and managing partner of Blohm+Voss, Dr. Herbert Aly complemented that “The idea of the Unique Circle Yachts allows for variation of a genotype and its phenotypes, offering a range of possible solutions based on a cognate platform. As a result, Zaha Hadid’s design is malleable to suit the very individual wishes and needs of a potential customer which lies at the heart of Blohm+Voss’ approach to yacht design. The strength of the design lies not just in its functionality and form, but also its effortless adaptability.”
Just a reminder, the grand event of lifestyle, decoration and design Maison et Objet Paris will start on the 20th of January and will last until the 24th. It is the perfect environment for people who are passionate about design and the world as a wide variety of prestigious brands and designers share their common goal of celebrating the wonders of this industry. From avant-garde pieces to functional ones, Maison et Objet offers a bit of everything for all tastes.
